Prescriptions

Repeat Prescriptions

Are only available by written request. We do not take any requests for repeat medications over the phone for security purposes.

We have a computerised system and require 48 hours to process all requests. Use the prescription slip on the back of your previous prescription to re-order further medication. Clearly mark the items you require, or cross off the items you don't to reduce waste. In accordance with an initiative run by Aneurin Bevan University Health Board - we will also now require you to date and sign your request, this is an initiative to reduce waste. If your prescription slip is not available we will happily process your request noted down on any slip of paper, be sure to include: your name, address and/or date of birth, and the items you require, signed and dated.

You can request your regular medicines in a number of ways:

  • You or someone on your behalf can post it into the secure box to the side of the surgery enquiry desk
  • You can ask your local pharmacist to order on your behalf. All of the local pharmacies also operate a prescription delivery service so once they have ordered for you they will also collect and deliver your items (ordering and collection is free, some pharmacies now charge for delivery), ring your local pharmacist to discuss your private arrangement and whether this is suitable for you
  • You can post it to us at our surgery address, if you enclose a stamp addressed envelope we will happily post it back to you as well
  • You can email your request to Glanyrafonsurgery.Enquiries@wales.nhs.uk
  • You can order using My Health Online, you need to register with the practice for this service ahead of any requests, ask at Reception for your log in and pin to register online or complete the form on the 'online services' page of this website

Repeat Dispensing

The Practice is currently revising how it issues repeat prescriptions to a number of our patients, however not all patients will be suitable for this service.

If you are a stable patient on only a few regular repeat medicines are you are up to date with any screening necessary for these prescribed items then repeat dispensing may be suitable for you.

When the Practice repeat dispenses we issue the pharmacy of your choice with six repeat prescriptions at a time. What this means for you as a patient is that you will no longer have to order on a monthly basis. Once your Pharmacist is in receipt of all six scripts s/he will just dispense at 28 day intervals. When you run out of items you just go and collect your next prescription from your pharmacy or ring them directly to have your items delivered.. easy!

If you wish to enquire as to your suitability for this service pop in and ask at Reception.

Acute Prescriptions

It is sometimes possible to request medication that perhaps you have had before, or have recently been issued by a Consultant; but don't yet have this item listed on your monthly repeat order form. This is known as an acute request. Telephone Reception any morning and details of your request will be taken by a Receptionist. The Receptionist will require the patient's name, address, contact telephone number, what is required, the reason it is required. This will be passed to your GP. In turn, based on the information you have provided he may decide to issue as per your request, ring you to clarify further details or refuse where details are unclear. It is usually necessary to contact you back either for the Doctor to speak with you or notify you of the outcome of your request. It is vitally important you provide the Receptionist with an up to date contact number when you place your request.

Please note

The Surgery will no longer routinely issue minor items like paracetamol etc. unless they are already on your repeat list. Simple items available in Pharmacists/Supermarkets at a very cheap cost to the patient will be passed back simply as we do not have the resources to deal with these requests.

Choose Pharmacy

This is another initiative being promoted within the locality. There are 26 common ailments that your Pharmacist can treat you for and at no cost to yourself. The Pharmacist can issue, fill and dispense treatment where appropriate, and usually quicker than trying to secure an appointment with your GP.

There are some restrictions for safety reasons, and the Pharmacist also has additional restrictions in order for you to qualify to ensure possible or regular recurrence is not indicating a more sinister problem etc. Where the Pharmacist is unable to advise/treat a patient we would work with the Pharmacist to get a Health Professional to see you in a reasonable time frame so you, as the patient are not disadvantaged for trying to help yourself.
